About This Blog

Shapcano was the moniker used by William H. Shapland. My brother Bill is remembered and his memory honored by people in many different circles. We were touched to have the Washington Post publish an article about him when he left us in April, and overwhelmed to see Georgetown University's tribute and life celebration. We were moved once again to find fans of his writing keeping his on-line published works alive. This blog is my contribution to that effort. Thanks for visiting.

Recapus Humongus

Recapus Humongus:

It’s been a while, hasn’t it? Ok. Rat and I are going separate ways on this. I haven’t written any lost boys stories in a long time because they’re still in Seattle in my mind and I’d like to have the use of them back. The only way to do this is to write them on through Joint Venture so that they’re available again.  Since it’s unreasonable to ask you to go back and reread everything to understand how things stand, and ridiculous to believe even I would remember otherwise, I present this recap containing the salient features of the stuff I wrote. Because I am far to old and cowardly to attempt to synopsize my betters, you’ll notice that it’s just the odd chapters (which I wrote) until the battle at Dante’s Inferno.

Chapter 1

Lost boys presented with filthy ancient and magical flail after homeless man dies.

Chapter 3

Team investigates artifact. Owen has duplicate made by Goren and BeBop, Doc takes artifact to old friend (Pietr) who specializes in magical oddities.

Chapter 5

Mouse begins searching the matrix, Owen visits Madame M’s for advice, Doc learns the artifact may be: A) incredibly ancient; B) amazingly powerful and C) extremely valuable.

Chapter 7

Owen learns about the Atlantean foundation from Madame Magdelena, Doc’s schoolmate secretly alerts the Foundation about the artifact

Chapter 9

Owen and Mouse discuss the fate of the artifact, Lug and Hamon ask Bardo and Briar to come take a look at the artifact. Itami aids Doc in returning to neverland. Free spirit Briar ominously warns the team to seek the council of princes.

Chapter 11

Lost boys discuss plans for travel to Seattle. Two competing factions of the Atlantean Foundation plan to recover the artifact. The lost boys split up and fly to Seattle. Two teams of Mystic Crusaders are sent out- one containing Madcap, a psychopathic dwarf mage specializing in illusions and Nestor Enchanis, a hideous elf negotiator and the other containing Quillum, a totally ruthless sociopath albino.

Chapter 13

The lost boys- Owen, Doc, Itami, Hamon, Lug and Mouse change names becoming the Monster Squad-Cloak, Wolfman, Speed Racer, Edge, Manny and Rook. Monster squad begin to settle in. Quillum interrogates Pietr. Rook searches Matrix for fixers.

Chapter 15

Nestor and Madcap end stakeout of neverland. Quillum sends in report. Cloak counts coup on Capoerista and then punches out ganger to gain security for doss. Madcap tricks Vice Lord gang into butchering each other as “trick or treat” joke.

Chapter 17

Monster squad discusses Cloak’s “demonstration.” Quillum “convinces” local fixer to reveal lost boys departure. Gini, a free spirit associated with the Vice Lords observes Madcap’s handiwork and sets out to even the score.

Chapter 19

Rook explains his choice of fixer after describing the process of finding one. Nestor, Madcap and Quillum each arrive in Seattle. Madcap is followed by Gini. Speed moans about transportation problems in a new town.

Chapter 21

The Monster squad (less Manny who is artifact sitting) meet their new fixer Albrecht. Manny relives disasters from his past, courtesy of the artifact, which begins to seduce him. Both Mystic Crusader teams begin searching Seattle.

Chapter 23

The Monster Squad prepares for it’s meeting with Corwin ip Theranji, a functionary who can get them in front of the Council of  Princes. Manny’s seduction by the flail is so complete that when the team returns he considers them targets for the artifact’s killing power. Manny is knocked out before he can kill his teammates. Quillum learns of the Monster Squads upcoming meeting at Dante’s Inferno.

Chapter 25

Manny explains how his dreams were changed to influence him. He asks not to be left alone with the artifact again. The Dwarf begins to regain perspective when he leads the team through dawn Tai-Chi. Research reveals that their contact with the Council is an elf who plays hedonist with a taste for kink. While the team is meeting the deviant to get on the council’s agenda, the inferno is attacked.

Chapter 26

Nestor leads a mercenary team which fast ropes down to the club’s roof from an LTA. After blowing their way in, the mercs drop onto a crowded dance floor where Madcap creates the illusion of a wendigo. Outside Speed warns the squad that a second group of mercenaries have set up an ambush out on the street to catch those leaving the club. He also mentions that the LTA is being attacked by a feathered serpent. Inside the club Gini gets her revenge by casting the illusion of a mercenary killing wendigo on Madcap. The Dwarf is turned into so much cat chow by his own mercs.

Chapter 27

Making their way up from the private meeting rooms in the basement, the Monster quad encounters chaos on the stairs. Cloak’s shuriken takes out a pair of shooters pursuing Winterhawk and Ocelot. Rook mistakenly gets the credit. The Disassemblers, a local go gang, attack the mercs in the unauthorized ambush on their turf. The dracoform battling LTA crashes, after wounding the feathered serpent, taking part of a club neighboring building with it. The Monster squad reaches the street.

Chapter 28

Manny and Edge maintain suppressive fire on both groups of mercenaries from the roof of the neighboring building even after it gets hit with the LTA’s gondola. Corwin’s bodyguard relays plans for a second meeting as everyone steps into the gun battle on the street. Nestor aborts the roof attack. Cloak, Wolfman and Winterhawk  battle a city spirit which collapses on Cloak. Ocelot helps Rook and Wolfman dig for the phys ad who suddenly bursts from the rubble and, surrounded by a sickly purple glow, floats above the ground shouting unearthly phrases.  When he sees Winterhawk, he gestures demandingly and then aims the flail.

Chapter 29

Speed, frustrated by inaction, aids the Disassemblers, by opening fire on the would be ambushers. The misled mercenaries mutiny, maddening the murderously malefic Mystic Crusader, Quillum who rampages. Back on the roof of Dante’s Inferno, Nestor’s mercenaries begin affecting their escape by disguising themselves as Docwagon  workers. Rook tosses a rock at Cloak to distract him from using the flail on Winterhawk. Ocelot and Wolfman join in chuckin stuff at Cloak who loses his purple glow and falls to the street. Rook yells “Hey Rube” and all the Monster squad rush to the scene. Wolfman uses his last reserves of strength to try to heal his teammate, passing out when he fails. Rook orders everybody back to base.

Chapter 30

Rook visits a virtual bar to discuss situation with Corwin. When the elf demurs about the meeting, Rook tells him to have some high flying intercourse with a rolling donut (in a nice way) but that the elf can’t run the risk of not setting up the meeting with the princes because the artifact is too valuable to leave in the hands of irresponsible shadowrunners. While the runner and functionary exchange ideas in the world of imagination, three Paladins of the White Hart, Galron, Barnaby and Sayla Starseeker gather clues about the Monster Squad, finding the group disturbingly identical to the lost boys.

And here we are. If at any point I was too pithy for you to suck the marrow from the bones of the story (notice I didn’t say “my Tale” because that would have been too nasty)  please feel free to reread any chapter that was glossed over too quickly. Now, here’s the first chapter of the mutation of Joint Venture, which I am calling "Disjointed"
